SUBJECT:

TRIP REPORT - DENVER A' D RICULN:D, NASHIllGT0!i i

fly trip durinq the week of October 5,1931 included:

(1) a stop in Denver to meet with Loren Crow and Archie Kahan, the !!ESTEC censultants that did the Pf!P for the Yankee Roue Plant, (2) a site visit to the '::P-2 f:uclear Plant near Richland, Washington and (3) a meeting with our consultants at Pacific !!arthwest Laboratories (Pill) to discuss our safety and environnental review procedures in general and the River Dend review specifically.

During ny necting with Loren Crow and Archie l'ahan, I went over general cortments on the draft report, but spent nost of the time discussing the possible orographic effects and duration of rainfall. They provided detailed discussion and bases to support their judgements in these areas.

I told then I would submit written coments and suggested revisions.

On Tuesday I not Jim Chaffe and Ravin Bra G. Joshi of 1.'PPSS and David Schreiber, their consultant, at their offices north of Richland, !!ashington.

After a brief meeting, we went to the lli!P-2 site uhere we net with the Architectural Engineer representative, Al Scriperio, and went over site drainage plans which were in the final stages of preparation. We then walked the main plant area to look at the site drainage features, the spray ponds i

and pump house and to the top of the Reactor Building to look at roof drainage and an overall view of the site. !!e then drove through the Ui:P-1/4 site to the Columbia River to look at the river intake structure. He also stopped at the llHP-1/4 spray ponds to look at the revisions that were made between the er and OL licensing stage.

He returned to the UPPSS offices and discussed ny draft questions. Dennis flyers and Karen Pickett joined us to discuss the features of the spray ponds.

I learned that during the initial filling and testing of the ponds, they experienced excessive seepage from the ponds. They apparently will replace all the seals in the basins and re-test then for eeepage rates.
