SECTIONS III.G.3 AND III.L OF APPENDIX R TO 10 CFR PART 50 (SAFE SHUTDOWN CAPABILITY IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE)
By letter dated April 12, 1983, Yankee Atomic Electric Company (YAEC) submitted a proposal to provide an integrated safe shutdown system which could be used for safe shutdown in the event of a fire at Yankee. Further information was provided by letters dated June 9, 1983, February 15 and December 28, 1984, April 30 and November 7, 1985 and March 5, 1986.
As discussed in the enclosed safety evaluation report, the staff concludes that with installation of the dedicated safe shutdown system and the other plant modifications, the requirements of Section: III.G.3 and III.L of Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50, with respect to safe shutdown in the event of a fire are met. However, it should be noted that your request for exemptions from certain requirements of III.G.2 and III.G.3 for selected plant areas remains under staff review.
It is our understanding that the actions necessary to place the dedicated shutdown system into an operational status will be completed by the end of the Cycle 19 refueling outage. Please notify us in writing cf any significant changes in the estimated compleiion schedule and when the actions are actually completed.
