Staffing Requirements for Radiation Protection Technicians

Dear Mr. Martin:

We have received your Inspection Report 86-29 (50-498)/86-26 (50-499)

which requested information concerning staffing requirements to ensure that

radiation protection technicians in responsible positions will have

appropriate experience.

Per this request, we provide the following:

o

Plant General Procedures will be revised to state that the normal shift

complement of radiation protection personnel shall include a minimum of

one technician or supervisor with power reactor operating experience,

(i.e., above 20% power) of greater than one month.

Attachment 1 and Attachment 2 illustrate that STPEGS can, at this time,

..

o

support the planned five shift rotation while meeting the aforementioned

operating experience commitment.

o

Currently approved staffing for 1987 includes the addition of five

personnel meeting either Senior or Lead Radiation Protection Technician

qualification. This qualification will include power reactor operating

experience greater than one month.

If you should have any questions on this matter, please contact

Mr. S. M. Head at (512) 972-8392.

Very truly yours,

N s k,
