We have completed our staff review of the Health Fhysics Monitoring Plan for the Durango, Colorado UMTRA site. You provided this plan to us by letter dated July 8,1986, for infonnational purposes as directed by the existing DOE /NRC Memorandum of Understanding.

Our comments reflect the requirements of the generic " Health Physics Monitoring Plan" dated March 28, 1986.
In general, the proposed surface water and ground water monitoring programs fail to meet the requirements of this plan.

Section 3.4.2.1 of the generic " Health Physics Monitoring Plan" dated March 28, 1986, states that quarterly monitoring of ground water shall be conducted and analysis performed for uranium-chain isotopes, specifically, U-238, Ra-226 and Th-230.
