SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MEETING ON USE OF ASME CODE CASE N-411 WITH MUI.TIPl.E RESPONSE SPECTRA. - JANUARY 22, 1987 The meeting was held to discuss the methodology used by the applicant regarding the above sub. ject, and to develop agreement between the applicant and the NRC staff on corrective measures to be applied to parts of the methodology which the staff has found unacceptable. The attendees at the meeting are shown in Enclosure 1.
The viewgraphs presented by the applicant are provided in Enclosure 2.
Discussion:
The staff had indicated to the applicant by letter dated January 16,1987, and previously by telephone contact, that the applicants use of Code Case N-411 in con.iunction with the multiple support input response spectra method (MRS) of analysis was unacceptable. During the meeting, the applicant presented results from 8. study calculations which had been performed using the methods indicated by the staff to be acceptable. These results demonstrated that the average ratio of total calculated stress to allowable stress for these systems did not significantly change (less than 10% increase) when the acceptable methods were used.
In addition, the average margins (allowable stress divided by calculated stress minus 1.0) on these calculations were large, in the range of 1.5 to 9.
The applicant proposed performing 15 sets of such study calculations for the 12 applicable piping systems. To provide reasonable assurance that these 15 study calculations represent a sample size large enough to demonstrate that they are typical of the 58 analyses of record, the staff requested that the applicant include the following piping system l '
variables in these study calculations:
1.
All applicable piping diameters.
l 2.
All applicable elevations.
3.
Response spectra at all applicable locations.
4.
All support design types.
In a letter dated January 30, 1987, the applicant submitted a detailed description of the pronosed program. The letter commits to include all of

the above variables as part of the study. The staff has concluded that the applicant's program is acceptable pending documentation of final results, and pending a response to the followino comments:
1.
It is the staff's understanding that for the remaining 43 analyses of record for which no study calculation was performed, the average margins are in the same range as those in the 15 study calculations.
If this not the case, additional study calculations should be performed for those systems which currently have significantly lower average margins.
2.
The applicant should provide a commitment trat all future pipina seismic analyses will be performed using the a ceptable methods outlined in the staff's letter of January 16, 1987.
