DAMAGED RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIALS SHIPMENT

-On June 30, 1999, the licensee notified NRC Region I that on June 29, 1999, a shipping container loaded with an internally contaminated vacuum l cleaning device, used at Maine Yankee for asbestos removal, was damaged when the! truck hauling the container passed under an overpass on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90). -the overpass, aut was notified of the incident by a following truck. The i truck driver then stopped at the Ludlow rest stop near the junction of

-I-90 and I-84 and contacted the licensee. The licensee responded to the rest.stop and determined that a small gap was opened in the top of the  !

container lid. No radioactive aaterial was released and there was no structural damage to the shipping container. The licensee repaired and sealed the small gap in the container lid. The shipping container was oversized, and the licensee had obtained a wide load permit for the 1 shipment. -The truck will remain at the rest stop until the licensee '

decides whether to return the container to Maine Yankee or send it to the original destination, a Westinghouse facility in Pennsylvania.

The licensee notified the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and
