Dear Mr. Nauman:

N. Thompson, DHFT

Subject:

V.C. Summer Nuclear Station, Pressurized Thermal Shock 10 CFR 50.61 By letter dated January 23, 1986, you submitted information on the material properties and the fast neutron fluence of the reactor pressure vessel in compliance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.61.

We have reviewed the material properties and chemical composition and find them acceptable. We have also reviewed the fast neutron fluence on the inside surface of the pressure vessel in view of the material properties. We find that the Virgil C. Sumer pressure vessel meets the toughness requirements of 10 CFR 50.61 for 32 effective full power years of operation.

However, we request that you submit periodic future re-evaluations of the RT and the corresponding comparison with the predicted values. Such suSIikttals could be made at the same time as the Pressure-Temperature operating limits required by 10 CFR 50 Appendix G. Our safety evaluation report is enclosed.

This request for information is covered under OMB clearance No. 3150-0011.

Sincerely,

/s/

Jon B. Hopkins, Project Manager PWR Proiect Directorate #2 Division of PWR Licensing-A Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
