Gentlemen:
This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Messrs. J. M. Hinds
Jr., P. G. Brochman, W. J. Kropp, D. E. Jones and Ms. J. A. Malloy of this
office on January 1 - 29, 1987, of activities at Byron Station Units-1 and 2,
authorized by NRC Operating Licenses No. NPF-37 and No. NPF-60 and to the
discussion of our findings with Mr. R. E. Querio and others of your staff at
the conclusion of the inspection.
The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during
the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective

examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and
interviews with personnel.
During this inspection, certain of your activities appeared to be in violation
of NRC requirements, as described in the enclosed Notice. The inspection
showed that action had been taken to correct the identified violations and
to prevent recurrence. Our understanding of ycur corrective actions are
described in Paragraphs 4.c and 4.e of the enclosed inspection report.
If you do not agree with our statement of your corrective actions, you are
requested to inform us in writing. Otherwise, no reply to the violations is
,
required and we have no further questions regarding this matter at this time.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of
this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC
Public Document Room.
