DESCRIPTION:

The outer physical characteristics of the 02-0036-ML-1 are those of a closed steel cylinder 5-3/8 inches in height and 3-1/2 inches in diameter, mounted with its longest axis vertical on a 3/16 inch thick steel bottom plate. The bottom plate is. attached to the cylinder with eight screws. -The 3/16 inch thick steel top plate is welded to the cylinder which has a wall thickness of 7/16 inch. R mounting bracket is welded to the side of the cylinder.

The mounting bracket-extends the full length of_ the device and also serves as a

_ protected-: passageway for electrical leads from electrical components mounted inside the device. A tubular cable connector housing welded to the upper portion of the mounting bracket, and projecting laterally from it, is a continuation of the protected passageway and partially encloses an internal sleeve and cable connector assembly. .The entire unit-is designed to be airtight.

-The source of radiation is mounted at the approximate center of a cylindrical shield consisting of two Mallory-1000 cylindrical shields fitted together one on-top of the other. _ The lower-shield section includes = a beam port, with maximum

. dimensions of 15/16 inch (height) by 1/4 inch (width) at the outer surface, and

' _~ suitable machined openings for the mounting of the Mallory-1000 source rotor.

=The. source at the edge of the rotor is moved 45 degrees between the "On" and "Off" positions by the' application of power to the rotary solenoid mounted at the-bottom of the shield assembly and coupled to the rotor. The solenoid acts >

,against a return spring which returns-the source to the shielded position when power is interrupted.

Internally mounted microswitches indicate the position of the source rotor as "On" or "Off" by parallel wired, dual red and green lights at the control cnnsole.

LABELING:

A metal label 3-3/8 inches by 2-3/16 inches, attached to the outside of the device 90% from the cable connector bears the following:
