' DESCRIPTION:

! {The outer _ characteristics of the 02-0036-ML-1 are those of a

< closed steel _ cylinder 5-3/8 inches (136.5 mm) and 3-1/2 inches:

_(88.9-mm)nin diameter, mounted with its longest axis vertical on f a13/16 inch (4.0 mm) thick steel bottom plate. The 3/16 inch-l- thick steel 1 top plate is welded to the cylinder which has a wall i- thickness of 7/16 inch (11.1 mm) . A mounting bracket is welded-

- to.the side of the= cylinder..

The mounting bracket extends the full length of the device and' also serves as a protected passageway for-electrical leads-from electrical components mounted inside the device. JL tubular. cable .

connector housing welded to the upper portion of the mounting 1 ,

bracket, and projecting laterally from it, is a continuation of the protected passageway and partially encloses an--internal sleeve ano cable connector assembly. The entire unit is designed to be airtight.

The source-of-the radiation'is mounted at the approximate center of a_-cylindrical shield consisting of two Mallory-1000 cylindrical = shields fitted together one on the topEof'the other.

The: lower shield section' includes a. beam port, with maximum dimensions- of f15/16 inch l- (23.8 rmn) in height by 1/4 inch (6.4 mm)

~

in width at the outer surface, and suitable; machined openings for the. mounting of the Mallory-loco source rotor.- The source at the edge of the rotor is moved 45 degrees between-the "on" and "off"

_ positions-by the application-of= power to the rotary solenoid mounted at the bottom of the shield assembly and coupled to the rotor.. The solenoid acts against a return spring which returns the source to the shielded position when power is interrupted.

Internally mounted micro switches indicate the position of the source rotor as "on" or "off" by parallel wired, dual red and'

green lights at the control console.

A metal label 3-3/8 inches (85.7 mm) by 2-3/16 inches (55.6 mm),

attached to the outside of the device 90* from the cable connector bear the following: ,

CAUTION: RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL Cesium-137 mc Date of Mee.surement Model No. 02-0036-ML-1 '

BRUN CORPORATION, COLUMBUS, OHIO The label is basically yellow in color with black lettering and a magenta radiation symbol.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

In accessible areas at one foot from the surface of the 02-0036-ML-1 are 3 mR/hr (30 pSv/hr) or less with a 61Lmillicurie ,

(2,26 MBq), cesium-137 source in the "off" position. A radiation i level of 7 mR/hr-(70 pSv/hr) exists over a small_ area in the region of the beam porc which is inaccessible with the unit installed.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be

. determined by the licensing authority.

  • The device shall be leak tested'at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.
  • REVIEWER NOTE: The 02-0036-ML-1 device was evaluated on the basis that it will be mounted flush to-the side of a steel mold thereby preventing access to the~ beam of radiation and reducing radiation levels in the forward direction to about 0.1 mR/hr (1 pSv/hr) . If other applications are proposed, an evalue. tion.of radiation levels in the forward direction will be necessary.

  • REVIEWER NOTE: Since an "on-off"--indicator is not located at the source shield and since the control console may be remote for the shield, considerations must be given to exposure-of persons'not aware of the exposed position of the source.

~

  • REVIEWER NOTE: The-user was instructed by the Brun Corporation to avoid tampering-with the devices containing the cesium-137' source. The Brun' Corporation stated that a service contract-would6normally?be-sold with each 02-0036-ML-1 to include six month 1 visits by Brun representatives ^for the purposes of inspecting the devices and. performing source leak tests.
  • -REVIEWER NOTE .The'Brun CorporationihadSalso stated that

, they would-install and relocate the source. holders and perform a. radiation survey at the1 time of installation.

4 SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

These devices were originally approved-fore licensing purposes on 1 February 18,-1966, by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The Model 02-0036-ML-1 and ML-1-5 Fill-Level Gauge Source Holders are no longer manufactured =and distributed by-Brun Sensor Systems.

Brun-Sensor Systems materials license terminated January 23, 1973 and the company was acquired by1 Industrial Nucleonics Corporation

-that-same month.

There is insufficient information on file for these devices to-perform'a safety evaluation._ -Therefore, this certificate is

-being;taken to inactive status without further review based on

'the original review and approval. issued by the AEC.
