REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NQ11 NR-8094-D-808-S DATE: September 29, 1997 PAGE 2 OF 4, DEVICE TYPE: Fill Level Gauge Source, Holder DESCRIPTION:

These devices essentially-consist of the internals used in the 35-0102 and 35-0103 devices surrounded by additional shielding.

For-the 35-0402 and 35-0404, this additional shielding consists of the use of an noper Mallory-1000 shield over 3 inches (76.2 mm) in thickness giving an additional 1-23/32 inches (43.7 mm) of shielding over the 35-0102 and 35-0103; 2-1/4 inches (57.2 mm) of additional lead shielding on the periphery (wall) of the shield; and an additional 1-7/16 inches (36.5 mm) of lead shielding at the bottom of'the~ device.

Forithe 35-0403, the additional shielding is the same with the

exception of the bottom of the shield assembly where the additional lead shielding is 11/16 inch (17.5 mm).

All units have fan-shaped collimators. The 35-0402 collimator is 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) wide and has a 15' spread, the angle being measured downward from a horizontal at the top of the source.

The 35-0403 collimator is 1/4 inch wide at its origin and 1 inch

'(25.4 mm) wide at the-outer surface of the device and has a 27' spread.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

In accessible areas at one foot (304.8 mm) from the surface of a Model135-0402 containing 100 millicuries (3.70 GBq) of cobalt-60 are-4.mR/hr (40 pSv/hr) of less. A radiation level of 20 mR/hr

-(200 pSv/hr)' exists over a small area in the region of the beam port which is inaccessible with the unit installed. The radiation level at the

  • bottom" of the 35-0402 is less than i 2 = mR/hr (20 pSv/hr) . The 35-0403 has less shielding in this area than-the 35-0402. -Radiation levels for higher activities may be derived by extrapolation.

l REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO.: NR-8094-D-808-S DATE: September 29, 1997 PAGE 3 OF 4 DEVICE TYPE: Fill Level Gauge Source Holder LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority. l i

e The device shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed l 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.

  • REVIEWER NOTE: The user was instructed by the Brun Corporation to avoid tampering with the device containing the cobalt-60 source. The Brun Corporation stated that a service contract would normally be sold with each device to include visits at six month intervals by a Brun Corporation representative for the purpose of inspecting the devices and performing source leak tests.
  • REVIEWER NOTE: The Brun Corporation had also stated that they would install and relocate the source holders and perform radiation surveys at the time of installation.
  • REVIEWER NOTE: The devices were evaluated on the basis that they will be mounted at the side of a steel mold thereby preventing access to the beam of radiation and reducing radiation levels in the forward direction to about 0.1 mR/hr (1.0 pSv/hr). If other applications are proposed, an cvaluation of radiation levels in the forward direction will be necessary.
  • REVIEWER NOTE: Since an "on-off" indicator is not located at the source shield and since the control console may be remote from the shield, consideration must be given to exposure of persons not aware of the exposed position of the source.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

These devices were originally approved for licensing purposes on February 9, 1968, by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The Model 35-0402, 35-0403, and 35-0404 Fill-Level Gauge Source Holders are no longer manufactured and distributed by Brun Sensor Systems. Brun Sensor Systems materials license terminated January 23, 1973 and the company was acquired by Industrial Nucleonics that same month.
