Dear Mr. Malaguti:

In response to the public and media interest regarding the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station and the need expressed by local officials to better understand what activities are taking place, I have asked my staff to prepare on a trial basis weekly status reports from the NRC Resident Insp'ector Office at Pilgrim.

The first such report is enclosed with this letter. These reports are intended to provide NRC management and the public with highlights of the plant activi-ties and NRC inspection activities at the Pilgrim Station. The reports will cover seven day periods ending each Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. In addition to the standard distribution, these reports will also be distributed to the media through the NRC Public Affairs staff in the Region I office.

It should be noted that the weekly status reports are not intended to supplant the routine resident inspector and specialist inspection reports. Inspection reports are still the main vehicle through which findings of a regulatory nature, such as violations, will be documented, as well as detailed technical information in support of the inspection findings. Consequently, these reports will tend to highlight activities or occurrences but will not provide an analy-sis. Our attempt herein is to provide more timely facts; to provide more in-depth discussion to put things in perspective would require more time and re-sources that we don't have.

Current plans are to issue these reports weekly until the end of August when the value of the program will be assessed. In that regard any feedback you wish to provide will be appreciated.

The focal point in Region I for the Pilgrim facility is the Project Section Chief, Jack Strosnider.
