Fill-Level Gauge Source Holder-DESCRIPTION:
The outer physical characteristics of the ML-1-4 are those of a steel cylinder 9-1/8 inches (231.8 mm) in height by 7-3/4 inches (196.9 mm) in diameter mounted with its longest axis vertical on a 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) thick steel base plate.
The base plate,
-which includes an electrical cable connector, is attached to the cylinder with eight screws.
The 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) thick steel top plate is welded to the cylinder. Mounting brackets are welded to the side or bottom of the device.
The source of radiation is mounted at the approximate center of an inner cylindrical shield consisting of an assembly of two Mallory-1000 cylindrical shields.
These shields, a rotary solenoid and an outer cylindrical lead shield are contained within an inner-steel can with the lead shield resting on the base plate.
An outer shield of lead surrounding this inner assembly at the top and sides.
A rotary solenoid mounted at the bottom of the Mallory-1000 shield assembly has its rotor coupled to a Mallory-1000 rotor.
The source, at the edge of the rotor, is moved 45 degrees between the "on" and "off" positions.
The interruption of power to the solenoid causes the rotor to act against a return spring which returns the sources to the shielded position. In the "on" position, the source is exposed through a rectangular beam port 1-7/8 inches ( 4 7. 6 mm) in height and H inch (12.7 mm) in width.
Internally mounted micro switched indicate the position of the source rotor as "on" or "off" by parallel wired, dual, red and green lights at the control console.

Fill-Level Gauge Source Holder LABELING:
A metal label 3-3/8 inches (85.7 mm) by 2-3/16 inches (55.6 mm),
attached to the outside of the device 90 from the radiation beam bear the following:
CAUTION:
RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL Cobalt-60 mc Date of Measurement Model No.
ML-1-4 BRUN CORPORATION, COLUMBUS, OHIO The label is basically yellow in color with black lettering and a magenta radiation symbol.
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
Accessible areas at one foot from the surface of the ML-1-4 are 3.2 mR/hr (32 pSv/hr) or less with a 53 millicurie (1.96 GBq),
cobalt source in the "off" position. A radiation level of 9.5 mR/hr (95 pSv/hr) exists over a small area in the region of the beam port which is inaccessible with the unit installed.
LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE1 Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority.
The device shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) or removable contamination.
REVIEWER NOTE:
The Brun Corporation had also stated that they would install and relocate the source holders and perform radiation surveys at the time of installation.

Fill-Level Gauge Source Holder LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE: (Cort.)
REVIEWER NOTE:
The user was instructed by the Brun Corporation to avoid tampering with the device containing the cobalt-60 source.
The Brun Corporation stated that a service contract would normally be sold with each ML-1-4 to include six month visits by a Brun Corporation representative for the purpose of inspecting the device and performing source leak tests.
REVIEWER NOTE:
The ML-1-4 device was evaluated or the basis that it will be mounted flush to the side of a steel mold thereby preventing access to the beam of radiation and reducing radiation levels in the forward direction to about 0.1 mR/hr (1 pSv/hr).
If other applications are proposed, an evaluation of radiation levels in the forward direction will be necessary.
REVIEWER NOTE:
Since an "on-off" indicator is not located at the source shield and since the control console may be remote for the shield, considerations must be given to exposure of persons not aware of the exposed position of the source.
SAFETY ANALYSIS
SUMMARY
These devices were originally approved for licensing purposes on December 17, 1965, by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
The Model 02-0009-ML-1 and ML-1-4 Fill-Level Gauge Source Holders are no longer manufactured and distributed by Brun Sensor Systems.
Brun Sensor Systems materials license terminated January 23, 1973 and the company was acquired by Industrial Nucleonics Corporation that same month.
There is insufficient information on file for these devices to perform a safety evaluation.
Therefore, this certificate is being taken to inactive status without further review based on the original review and approval issued by the AEC.
