SUBJECT:

DAVIS BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT NO. 1 - ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING ULTIMATE HEAT SINK / SERVICE WATER TEMPERATURE MEETING SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 13, 1997 (TAC NO. M94621)

Dear Mr. Wood:

As discussed in our letter to you dated October 12, 1995, the NRC staff identified an apparent inconsistency between water temperature for the ultimate heat sink analysis and the service water system temperature used for containment response analysis following a loss-of-coolant accident.

You responded by letter dated January 31,1996.

By letter dated June 10, 1997, we requested that you meet with the NRC staff to discuss several issues which were identified as a result of the staff's revf w of your letter dated January 31, 1996. Additional concerns were f g arded to you by letter dated June 17, 1997.

The staff requests that you be prepared to provide details on the seismic analysis summarized in your January 31, 1996, letter.

In particular, the staff asks that, if possible, you present the following:

(1) A detailed map showing, at a minimum, the intake structure, canal,

)ipeline, embankments, and locations of all bore holes (wells, test 1 oles, drill holes, probe holes, etc.):

(2) Logs of all bore holes, including elevations, description of materials, standard penetration test blow counts, densities, moisture content and other index properties, shear wave velocities, material moduli, and elevation of water tah'E:

(3) Cross sections through area of interest showing embankments and depth of canal, geologic layers, and locations of bore holes: and (4) Soil liquefaction analysis and slope stability analysis.

Please include models and methods used, ground motion used and where input, h.

Please have your staff contact me at 301-415-1390 to discuss details of how this material will be presented.
