I an writing to ycu because geu repcesent me as an NFC Ccmmissioner and because gcu are chairman Of the NRC. I have rever felt so strongly about a political issue in my life as ! do abcut the importance of delaying operation of the Shearon Harris nuclear plant in North Carclina.

I have not aluays been opposed to Shearcn Harris as a nuclear plant.

For 11 years my husband and I published an award winning weekly newspaper in neighcoring Chatham County. And although we vere 1.ncun an an cutspcLen weeLig, we never tcck cn Shearon Harris as one of our issues.

Nou I a t, a public schoci teacher and I have just completed extensive research and reading in preparation for a social studies unit I taught entitled " Deciding abcut Erergy '. Eased on that study, I I

have had tc conclude that nuclear pcuer through the present fission methcd sericusly endangers the human race. We can nct live with the radiaticn waste it produces, and we have absciutely no safe place to put the waste. (It was and continues to be uncenscicunable tc start up nuclear pcuer plants befcre the waste problem is solved.)

Furthermore, the NRC itself represents a limiting and cangerous social aspect of nuclear pcuer because it is afraid to admit what I have just stated. The NRC has its rects in the premetien Of the nucicar industry, and consequently its integrity as a regulator is undermined.
