to SERIAL: NLS-87-013 NRC Question Will the station batteries switch on automatically given a loss of offsite power, and are the control room lights automatically powered by the station batteries? If not, what operator actions must be taken to provide power to the lights?

Response

Although the preferred source of emergency power to the control room lights is the diesel generators, the station batteries will automatically supply power to the control room lights, 'vith no time delay or operator action, given a loss of offsite power and failure of the diesel generators.

NRC Question i

How long will the batteries alone provide power for control room lighting in conjunction with other station loads?

Response

l As stated above, the emergency power supply for the control room lights is the diesel generators; however, a fire protection load study indicates that each unit's batteries will provide lighting for a minimum of two hours.

NRC Question What is the cost of installing eight-hour, battery-powered emergency lighting units in the control room?

Response

l This modification would cost approximately $112,000.
