Subject:

Regulatory Guide 1.97 - Response to Safety Evaluation

Dear Ms. McKenna:

Reference (1) forwarded the staff safety evaluation for conformance of Yankee Nuclear Power Station to Regulatory Guide 1.97.

The safety evaluation concluded that Yankee either conformed to or has justified deviations from the guidance of Regulatory Guide 1.97 except for the neutron flux variable when used for the long-term monitoring of positive reactivity addition events.

Yankee will perform a cost benefit analysis using probabilistic risk assessment techniques to evaluate this concern. Yankee will provide the results of this analysis by June 30, 1987. This response will also provide a schedule for the completion of any modifications identified in this review.

We hope this schedule is satisfactory, but please contact us with any questions.

Very truly yours, YANKEE ATOMIC ELECTRIC COMPANY 8702260019 070213 PDR ADOCK 05000029 P
