Millstone Station (, .D o Notification of Unit 2 Discharaos Aerated Waste Monitor!na Tank Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) has previously discussed with you protocols for the reporting and processing of certain wastewater containing small amounts of hydrazine until no hydrazine above detection limits is observed. As requested by the Departn.ent, NNECO hereby submits the following written notification of such discharges.

On Septernber 12,1997, consistent with the manner in which similar wastewater has been previously handled (Reference 6 and 8), 2,872 gallons of wastewaters from the Aerated Waste Monitoring Tank were processed through the demineralizers and filters associated with DSN 0018 2 prior to discharge. Prior to processing, hydrazine was detected at 0.370 ppm. These wastewaters met alllimits associated with DSN 0018 2 using the titration method (<350 ppb).

As outlined in a letter from M. Harder to S. E. Scace dated August 13,1997 (Reference

7) and as subsequently discussed with the Department, NNECO is no longer required to verbally notify the Department of discharges from DSN 0018 2 and 001B-3 when the hydrazine concentration prior to processing is less than detectable using the titration method (<350 ppb). However, NNECO will continue to notify the Department by letter on a monthly basis when the hydrazine concentration prior to processing is greater than 350 ppb.

Discharaos from DSN 0018 9 Res_c. tor Buildina Closed Coolina Water (RBCCW)

Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) has previously discussed with you the protocols for the discharge of certain wastewaters due to maintenance activities associated with the heat exchangers at Unit 2 (References 1,3,6,7, and 8) via DSN001B 9. In this letter, NNECO, provides information relative to the discharge of wastewaters on August 14 and September 9,1997 respectively via DSN 001B-9 from draining activities associated with the Reactor Building Closed Cooling Water (RBCCW) .

system.

Activities associated with the draining of the RBCCW on August 14,1997 include the draining of accumulated service water (sea water) leakage into the sump. Activities associated with the draining of the RBCCW on September 9,1997 include the draining of service water from the RBCCW system to the RBCCW sump. Consistent with Reference 7, hydrazine was below detectable limits (< 350 ppb). The followig provides additionalinformation with respect to each of these discharges from tne RBCCW sump via DSN 001B 9; Volume Free Available Date Discharaed (aal) Chlorine (opm) Temp, (F) 08/14/97 980 0.05 74 09/09/97 2,696 < 0.02 70 Each discharge met all NPDES permit requirements associated with the discharge of wastewaters at DSN 001B 5 and DSN 001B-9.
