SUBJECT:

REQUESTED ASSISTANCE (PLANT INFORMATION) FROM THE PHILADELPHIA ELECTRIC COMPANY CONCERNING NRC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT WORK ON THE EFFECTS OF I0 DINE CHEMISTRY ON SOURCE TERM ESTIMATES

Dear Mr. Daltroff:

Re: Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, Units 2 and 3 As part of the NRC staff's continuing research effort on severe accident source term estimates, the staff is testing certain assumptions pertaining to the modeling of severe accident source term estimates. One of the assumptions of concern relates to water pools and containment building surfaces acting as permanent repositories for any fission product iodine.

In order to resolve this issue, the Office of NRC Research is undertaking research in this area.

For meaningful resolution of this iss.ue, we request your voluntary assistance in helping the NRC to gain certain plant specific information and data on the Peach Bottom facility. We are interested in obtaining plant specific data on the type of coatings and the total surface area each in the various compartments to the containment and reactor building. We have obtained similar information from a representative PWR (Surry, Units 1 and 2) and have enclosed a copy of this information as an example of the type of data we need if you decide to participate in this effort.

can' assist us in this Please contact me if the Philadelphia Electric Company (301) 492-4993.
