9 MAY 2 71986 Docket Nos. 50-282/306 Mr. D. M. Musolf, Manager Nuclear Support Services Northern States Power Company 414 Nicollet Mall Midland Square, 4th Floor Minneapolis, Minnesota 55401

Dear Mr. Musolf:

The Commission has completed the review of your November 4, 1983, response to Generic Letter (GL) 83-28 item 1.2 dealing with data and information capability before, during, and after a reactor trip for the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Unit Nos. I and 2.

Our evaluation includes the adequacy of your response related to having a reliable source of necessary information to monitor reactor conditions during unscheduled shutdowns.

Part of our review included telecon discussions (March 5, and May 5, 1986) during which you committed to provide all of the time history parameters as part of the new computer upgrade program, enabling data acquisition at a 10 second interval for periods of five minutes prior to the reactor trip until ten minutes after the trip. You also committed to provide control rod and PORV position indications to the list of Sequence of Events Parameters or to the time History Parameter of the new computer upgrade program. The implementation of these modifications would be after the computer upgrade is completed in calendar year 1989. Our evaluation concludes that your responses and commitments to this item is adequate in content and, therefore, is acceptable. We consider our review for item 1.2 complete.

A copy of the staff's safety evaluation is enclosed.

Sincerely, Dominic C. Dilanni, Project Manager Project Directorate #1 Division of PWR Licensing-A
