Dear Mr. Edwards:
' On August 5,' 1999, NRC staff participated in a conference call at the request of Framatome l'
Technologies incorporated (FTI) staff to discuss the status of FTl activities associated with the l
Electrosleeve project. During the conference call NRC staff stated that although a license l
- amendment request for use of the Electrosleeve is not in-house, we are willing to support FTI's continuing Electrosleeve project efforts (i.e., through conference calls, meetings, etc.), but we are unable to expend resources until two items are addressed. Please respond in writing to the l
following:- 1) does FTl have a. lead plant or have knowledge of several plants that are interested L
in applying this technology, and 2) is FTl willing to pay for the staff's time spent in these efforts?
l In addition to the issues stated above, I would like to briefly address another issue involving future Electrosleeve license amendment requests. As was the case with the Callaway Plant
. application, review of the next Electrosleeve amendment request submitted to the NRC staff will include risk considerations. I would highly recommend that the next submittal address the applicable risk considerations. As indicated above, the staff intends to review risk implications, and information that you provide, over and above that currently available to the staff, will result in a more efficient and effective staff review.
I If you have any questions, please contact Cheryl D. Beardslee, of my staff, at (301) 415-2751.
Your cooperation is appreciated.
Sincerely, N!NA!.S!GNEDBY:
