Safety Evaluation of General Electric Company Topical Report NED0-31130, "La Salle Unit 2 Fine Motion Control Rod Drive Demonstration Test Description" Your letter, dated February 25, 1986, and as supplemented by letters dated May 12 June 11, and July 18, 1986, submitted the General Electric Company (GE)
Topical Report NEDO-31130. "La Salle Unit 2 Fine Motion Control Rod Drive Detron-stration Test Description" for our review.
The enclosed Safety Evaluation Report (SER) was prepared by the NRC staff as a result of evaluating your submittals. We find that the proposed Fine Motion Control Rod Drive (FMCRD) Demonstration Test is acceptable for one cycle operation at La Salle Unit 2.
However, a generic problem was determined to have arisen as a result of this review pertaining to a purge line failure causing a high drive i
torperature (see the SER). The staff will pursue the issue with the General Electric Company as a generic issue pertaining to all drives.
In addition, the i
incorporation of the FMCRD Demonstration Test requires review of the Technical Specification exceptions prior to FMCRD installation.
