SUBJECT:
SPECIAL INSPECTION RE REPORT OF RADICACTIVE 111.UE OPAL.
CEMSTONFS On Janus 2,1982 Evelyn R. Hatson, Materials Inspector, interviewed in Royal Oak, Michigan, regarding his report that he had a rs onct ve rough blue opal (attached mean_s!.sted December 28, 1981, Phillip to Region III. file).
Mr. M revised his earlier comments now stating ti at the. hospital who surveyed ~the box of gemstones cuncluded t
that the radiation was not from the rough opal but origirated from samples of cuprosklodowjkite and torbernite, minerals containing natural uranium and which wereisto ed in the same box (attached letter dated December 11, 1981).
Mr.
indicated that these mineral samples were him to their owner.
A Region III independent survey of all of

opals showed boekground readings of 0.0's mR/hr at the surface'un ng an Eberline E-120 end window, G-M survey meter, NRC Serial number 007931',
calibrated on November 23, 1981.

- 81-92). During the conversation stated that these mineral samples containing natural uranium were not proces ied or refined.
They are there-fore exenpt from licensing under 10 rJR 40.11(b).
We consider the incident of the bine. pals and radioletive mini ral samplea to be closed.
