The Honorable Constance A. Morella 223 Cannon House Office Building Washington, DC 20515-2008
Dear Congresswoman Morella:
I am writing in response to your letter dated November 29, 1993, wherein you inquired about surveys performed at Neutron Products, Inc., in Dickerson, Maryland.
Specifically, you asked about information regarding the aerial background survey conducted and plans for the dissemination of survey results.
The purpose of the aerial survey was to determine the levels of natural background radiation and to detect the presence of man-made radiation surrounding the Neutron Products, Inc., site.
The aerial survey was conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy and will supplement the Maryland Department of Environment's inspection that was conducted with assistance from the U. S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Preliminary results indicated that radiation l
levels were not distinguishable from natural background radiation therefora no adverse health effects from the manufacturing of Cobalt-60 were present.
The results of the Maryland De)artment of Environment inspection will be available in several weeks, and at witch time will be accessible to the public; however, aerial background survey results will not be available until February. A copy of both survey reports will be provided to you upon their completion and receipt-to the NRC.
I hope that this information is responsive to your letter.
Sincerely, James M. Taylor Executive Director for.0perations cc:
