NOTE TO: Mike McCann FROM: Darrel Wiedeman

SUBJECT:

TELEPHONE CONTACT WITH THE PUBLIC REGARDING 1 UNIONTOWN LANDFILL Subsequent to the issuance of our inspection report on Goodyear Aerospace-Wingfoot facility on July 15, 1994, Bill Snell and I have received approximately 15-20 calls from members of the public requesting additional information regarding that report and/or a copy of that report. As you recall, within a week after the report was issued, Mary Grimmit had a "public meeting" to discuss the inspection findings and to discuss health issues with the residents that live in and around Wingfoot Lake. I was informed that approximately 200-250 persons attended that meeting and the subject of Uniontown Landfill was brought up at that meeting. The following individuals contacted me and/or I returned their call, to ask additional questions and request a copy of the report:

l During the telephone conversation with individuals 1, 2 or 3 (cannot remember which one) the individual asked me " What is NRC doing at the Uniontown Landfill". My response was " That issue is still undpr review by'the N,EC and I can not discuss it at this time". She then stated "Chris f ells me (or informed me) that the NRC requested the EPA's Inspector General to investigate this

matter". My response was "I am not at liberty to discuss that matter, you should talk to Chris about that". The called then asked general questions about how we .'.nd radioactive material in water and underground burials. The caller did not indicate to me the'she was a reporter from any newspaper. During the last several weeks only three people have, asked me questions regarding l Uniontown, these were Chris Borello, the caller referenced above (1,2 or 3) and an individual at Goodyear during my inspection.

My response has always been the same that it is still under review by the NRC and I can not discuss it at this time.
