20555 Attn: Transportation Certification Branch Application For Radioactive Materials Transportation Program Approval Scientific Measurement Systems Inc. (SMS) will be making routine radioactive material shipments of special form radioactive materials that are in excess of Type A quantities. In particular these shipments will include Co-60 and Ir-192 with maximum activities of 50 C1 and 200 Ci respectively. Therefore, in order to comply with 10 CFR 71 the following information is being submitted to the Director of the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Washington DC.
Radioactive Material Shipments At SMS Several different types of exposure devices are currently in use at SMS. These include the Gamma Industries 1006A and the Tech / Ops 616 exposure devices. Prior to shipment these exposure devices are loaded into NRC and DOT approved Type B(U) shipping overpacks that have been loaned, purchased, leased, or rented from licensed radioactive material vendors (e.g. Gamma Industries and Tech / Ops). These overpacks include a 20WC for shipment of the Gamma Industries 1006A exposure device and a Type B 715 shipping barrel for the Tech / Ops 616 exposure device.
Quality Assurance In regards to the above mentioned radioactive material shipments the enclosed quality assurance program has been incorporated into the radiation safety program at SMS and is currently in effect. The program is implemented with written procedures approved by SMS management and has been prepared according to the USNRC Regulatory Guide 7.10 Annex 3.
