99-38 Please close action 99-38. I spoke with the State of WI, the dose rates provided were for the device containing a radium source, and were sent to NRC by the State of WI. WI is going to clarify the situation with Seaman Nuclear. If Seaman Nuclear wishes to amend the NR certificate to add a radium source, then Seaman Nuclear will apply directly to the NRC.

In the meantime, since there was no fee charged for 99-38, and since at this point, we do not know for sure whether Seaman Nuclear will submit an application, nor how soon we would get it, we will close out 99-38, then if Seaman Nuclear sends in an application, we will log it in as a new action.

Thoso sources are designed for incorporation into moi sture/ density gauges.

The radicactive pelIet i s then doubt y encapsulated within reactor grade stalniess steel capsules which are sealed by argon arc wel di ng. The dimensions of the RAN.C1 capsul e are approximatel y 7 mm i n length by 10 mm in diameter. The dimensi ons of the RAN.C2 capsule are approxi matel y 14 mm i n I ength by 9 mm i n di ameter.

Both capsules meet the requi rements of the I AEA Special Form Regulations.

Based on these resul ts and on ANSI tests on simii ar capsules, the manufacturer estimates that these source models would achieve at I cast an ANSI rating of 43344.

Usi ng a BF(3) counter array and paraffin wax moderator assembly, the neutron emi ssi on of each source i s compared with the emi ssion from a standard radium-l 226/beryll i um source. The standard source has been cali brated by further compari son wi th standards measured at the Nati onal Physi cal Laboratory, Teddi ngton, Engl and.

Each source i s l eak tested by wi pe, bubbl e, and emanati on tests.
