HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 RESPONSE TO REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - ISI RELIEF REQUEST Gentlemen:

By letter NED-85-508 dated July 18, 1985, Georgia Power Company (GPC) requested specific relief from certain of the ASME Section XI Code requirements.to support inservice inspection activities during the upcoming Hatch Unit 1 (HNP-1) maintenance / refueling outage.

During the review of Relief Request 2.1.9 in Attachment 1 of the aforementfor.ed letter, Mr.

Birney Trouvlin of the NRC staff inquired about the makeup capacity of-the Control Rod Drive (CRD), Feedwater, and 'leactor Core Isolation Cooling (RCIC) systems and the maximum leakage rate for a CRD housing.

During a telephone conversation with Mr. Trouvlin on October 18, 1985, Mr. J. A. Edwards of GPC provided him with tne following information to support granting relief relative to pressure retaining welds in CRD housings:

CRD makeup flowrate:

160 gal / min.

(

General Electric specification 22A2750AF, Rev. 0)

Transfer (Feedwater) 1000 gal / min. (

RCIC makeup flowrate:

400 gal / min.

[ Note: While not identified to Mr. Trouvlin, the above CRD housing leakage rate would be applicable for all drive flange bolts failing in tension or the weld joining the flange to housing failing in tension, (refer to FSAR sections 3.4.6.4.3 and-3.4.6.4.4, respectively)].
