Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 2 ATWS Rule, 10 CFR 50.62 In a letter dated March 19, 1987(1) , Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) provided the NRC Staff with additional information with regard to the schedule for implementation of the ATWS rule, 10 CFR 50.62, at Millstone Unit No. 2. In addition, Reference (1) stated that NNECO would be re-evaluating the design of those modifications being proposed to address the requirements of10CFR50.62atMillgoneUnitNo.2,asdescribedinaletter dated October 11, 1985' NNECO stated that by April 30, 1987, we would inform the Staff of the results of that re-evaluation.

Accordingly, NNECO has reviewed our proposed modifications as outlined in Reference (2) and have decided to reconfirm our design as described in that letter. As stated in Reference (1),

NNECO intends to proceed with the installation of these modifications with the expectation of bringing Millstone Unit No.

2 into full compliance with 10 CFR 50.62 by the end of the Cycle 10 refueling outage currently scheduled to begin in June, 1989.

As such, Reference (1) requested that the NRC Staff complete their review of our proposed design and respond to NNECO with any comments no later than September 1, 1987. This will help to ensure that the implementation schedule as proposed above will l not be adversely impacted.
