Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Serial No.85-491 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation E&C/CDL:acm Attn:
Mr. Edward J. Butcher, Acting Chief Docket Nos. 50-338 Operating Reactors Branch No. 3 50-339 Division of Licensing License Nos. NPF-4 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission NPF-7 Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:
VIRGINIA POWER NORTH ANNA POWER STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 GENERAL DESIGN CRITERIA 17 ANALYSIS Your letter of November 13, 1984 provided a revised and updated Safety Evaluation for North Anna Units 1 and 2 with relation to GDC-17. In that letter, it was requested that the NRC be kept apprised of the status of the motor control center contactor coil issue until the final report was submitted for NRC teview.
In our letter of March 29, 1985, a copy of the Nuclear Environmental Qualification Test Report was made available to the NRC for review.
Enclosed is an addendum to that report. The letter of March 29, 1985 also committed Virginia Power to providing a replacement schedule for the size three (3) and larger 1E motor control center contactor coils.
The following schedule is submitted for your information:
- 1) Existing size 3 and larger IE motor control center contactor coils with greater than 80% duty cycle have a protected life span of 35 years.
- 2) Existing size 3 and larger IE motor control center contactor coils with less than an 80% duty cycle have a projected life span greater than the currently licensed life of the plant.
Virginia Power intends to replace size 3 and larger 1E motor control center contactor coils prior to the expiration of their projected life spans based on the above usage factors.

We believe that the above criteria meets with the intent of the GDC-17 program and is substantiated through the environmental qualification testing done by Wyle Laboratories (Report No. 47193-1).
Please contact this office if you require any additional information.
Very truly yours, W. L. Stewart Attachment cc:
