Dear Mr. Campbell:

SUBJECT:

SITE VISIT TO ARKANSAS NUCLEAR ONE (AN0)

As discussed with and agreed to by Dale James of your staff, a five-day site visit by a team of the NRC contractnr personnel from Battelle Pacific North-west Laboratories (PNL), identified in the enclosure, will be conducted from April 27, 1987.

The purpose of the visit is twofold.

One is to gather infor-mation as a part of the NRC's Nuclear Plant Aging Research (NPAR) program.

The NPAR program has been developed to systematically evaluate the effects of aging and service wear on plant safety systems and components and to provide technicalbasesforNRCrequirementsonplantlifeextension/Ilferenewal.

The reason for selecting AN0 for this survey stems from the previous visit by the PNL personnel during the Survey of Maintenance Practices at ANO.

The PNL team was impressed with the computerized Work Control Center concept as implemented at ANO and feel that it provides the best possible framework for aging assess-ment and life extension development.

The other purpose of the visit is to conduct a review of the ANO-2 Emergency Operating Procedure Technical Bases.

We request your assistance in making the necessary arrangements to allow the site visit team to perform the above-mentioned activities at your facility.

Shouldyouhaveanyquestionsconcerningthissubjectmatter,pleasecontact us.

Sincerely, Is/

Robert S. Lee, Project Manager Project Directorate - IV Division of Reactor Pro;ects - III, IV, V and Special Pro;ects
