Dear Mr. Andrews:
SUBJECT:
ULTRASONIC FUEL INSFECTION IN THE SPENT FUEL POOL The NRC staff has completed its review of your February 13, 1987 submittal 1,
regarding your plans to perform ultrasonic inspection of fuel assemblies in
~' '=
test equipment located in the cask loading area'of the Fort Calhoun spent fuel pool.' Your submittal requested the staff to modify its September 9, 1983 safety evaluation to allow, bypassing of the refueling machine interlock to allow the temporary transfer of fuel. assemblies in and out of Region 2 of the spent fuel pool during refueling outages for the purpose of inspecting the fuel assemblies.
The staff's Safety. Evaluation is enclosed.
The staff concludes that the tepparary transfer of discharged fhel assemblies to the test equipment in the cask loading area of the spent fuel pool for p
e' inspection during refueling outages is acceptable.
In addition' fuel l assemblies being permanently discharged may remain in the Region 2 spent fuel-racks provided that the re' quired burnup verification has been performed.
Sincerely, Original Wgnmo W a
