Subject:

McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 Gentlemen By letter dated May 14, 1986, Duke Power. proposed changes to the McGuire Nuclear Station Technical Specifications for Containment Isolation Valves. The proposal, in part, sought to change the designation of penetration M348 from the " Upper Head Injection Test Line" to " PALS Discharge" upon physical deletion of the Upper Head Injection (UHI) system. ' Subsequent discussions between our respective staffs have

~

determined that Duke needs.co document conformance of the modification with

.GDC 56. As shown on the attached drawing, the modified penetration will reuse the

-existing isolation valves, NI-267A and NI-264B, redesignated as WL-1302A and WL-1301B, respectively. This arrangement, with these valves receiving a Phase "A" Containment Isolation Signal (as indicated in the May 14, 1986 submittal) satis-fies GDC 56, (part 4) as the penetration will have one automatic isolation valve inside containment and one automatic valve outside containment. Additionally, an error has been identified in the original submittal for the insert to page 3/4 6-29 (proposed B 3/4 6-4L).

In the original submittal, valves WL-1301B and WL-1302A were both designated as " PALS DISCHARGE OUTSIDE CONTAINMENT ISOLATION",

as is correct for valve WL-1301B; Valve WL-1302A should be designated " PALS DISCHARGE INSIDE CONTAINMENT ISOLATION"; a revised insert page is attached. We regret any problems this may have caused.

If any additional information is needed, please contact us through normal licen-cing channels.

Very truly yours, h l' lhY Hal B. Tucker JBD/180/jgm
