ANNUAL OPERATING REPORT Idaho State University AGN-201 Nuclear Reactor Pocatello, ID 83209

1) Brief Narrative of Changes There have been no changes in facility design, performance characteristics or operating procedures relating to reactor safety during the calendar year, 1986.

a) A visual inspection of the control rod drive mechanisms was satisfactory.

b) Scram drop times of all control rods were less than 100 milliseconds.

c) Rod run-up times were measured and average reactivity insertion rates calculated. The maximum average reac-I tivity insertion rate was 0.035% per second for either of the safety rods or the coarse control rod.

d) Channel tests of all safety channels and interlocks have been prepared and found satisfactory.

e) Power and period calibrations were performed and no sig-nificant changes from the previous calibration were found, f) The shield tank was inspected. No water leaks or exces-sive corrosion was apparent.

g) Shutdown margin was measured and found to be greater than 2.1% reactivity with the most reactive rod inserted.

2) Monthly tabulation of reactor operation hours for 1986:

Month Hours Month Hours January 4.55 July February 9.87 August March 13.23 September 11.19 April 28.76 october 17.40 May 6.01 November 8.30 June December 9.23

4) September 26 - Channel #1-Count Rate Meter Pre-Scale switch was removed from the front of the console and located inside the chassis. The proper range setting was secured in place.

This was done to prevent possible operator error.

October 30 - The persistent moisture problem with Channel #2 was hopefully solved. The aluminum housing was coated with a liquid plastic and then encased in a polyethylene bag.

The plastic and bag were both tested by activation analysis and for reactivity effects and proved acceptable.

5) Changes to Facility .'

a) There have been no changes to the facility as described in the application for license.

b) . There have been no changes to the procedures as described in the Facility Technical Specifications.

c) No new experiments were performed with the AGN-201 reac-tor during the 1986 calendar year.

6) Summary of Safety Evaluations There were no new changes, tests, or experiments approved or performed during this reporting period.
7) Summary of Radioactive Effluents Released or Discharged to the Environment.

There were no Radioactive Effluents discharged during 1986.

i

8) Summary of Radiological Surveys Outside the Facility l

l No environmental surveys have been performed outside the facility.

9) Radiation Exposure l No person received greater than 50 millirem during this reporting period.
