QUAD-CITIES NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNIT TWO

SUMMARY

STATUS OF FUEL PERFORMANCE END OF CYCLE EIGHT JANUARY 1987 At the end of this reporting period, Quad-Cities Unit Two had completed eight Reactor cycles of operation. During that time, 2031 fuel assemblies had seen duty in the Unit Two core. Of those 2031 fuel assem-blies, 289 were determined to have failed and were discharged as leaker assemblies. All of the assemblies specified as being failed were of the initial fuel batch 7 x 7 lattice CX or CY bundles.

No sipping was performed on reload fuel assemblies at the End of Cycle Eight. This decision was based on the chemical and radiochemical data which showed no indication of leakage or failure.

In August, 1986, three fuel assemblies were tested using dry out-of-core sipping equipment. The sipping results showed no indication of fuel assembly failure. The three fuel assemblies that were sipped, are part of an EPRI project that is studying the effects of decontamination solution on the integrity of the fuel assemblies. Fuel assemblies LJG 764 and LJG 789 were exposed to two different chemicals while fuel assembly LJG 803 is being used as the control assembly. These fuel assemblies were sent to Babcox and Wilcox for destructive and non-destructive examinations. At the completion of the examination, these fuel assemblies will be recon-stituted and sent back to Quad-Cities Nuclear Power Station.

For Unit Two Cycle Nine, 152 new LYF - P8x8R (barrier clad) assem-blies were 100 percent visually inspected and loaded.
