OMAHA PUBLIC POWER DISTRICT Fort Calhoun Station Unit No. 1 September 1988 Monthly Operations Report I.
OPERATIONS SumARY Fort Calhoun Station began a slow power reduction from 80% on September 1 1988, to conserve fuel burnu) due to the extended start date for the i
refueling outage.
On Septem>er 16 a power reduction from 55% to 30% was required due to high levels of chemical contaminants in the steam generator l
secondary side.
Power was held at 30% until the scheduled shutdown for the eleventh refueling outage on Se)tember 28, 1988. As of September 30, 1988, the reactor coolant svstem had Decn cooled down to 395'F and was holding to leach chemical contaminants out of the steam generator secondary sido.
Many of the contaminants have a higher solubility in the range of 395'F.
Fort Calhoun Station set two world records for commercial power reactors in September 1988.
Fort Calhoun Station produced e.ontinuous, uninterrupted power to the electrical grid for 477 days, 13 hours1.50463e-4 days
0.00361 hours
2.149471e-5 weeks
4.9465e-6 months
, and 15 minutes.
In doing so, the reactor was continuously critical for 481 days, 3 hours3.472222e-5 days
8.333333e-4 hours
4.960317e-6 weeks
1.1415e-6 months
, and 31 minutes.
Fort Calhoun's old record of over 302 days for continuous power operation was set in 1984. Fort Calhoun also celebrated its 15th i
j anniversary of commercial operation on Se,tember 26, 1988.
Construction continues on the new training facility. Region IV Administra-tor, Mr. R. D. Martin, and Region IV Director of Reactor Projects, Mr. L. J. Callan made a site visit during September.

CHANGES, TESTS AND EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT WITHOUT C0 m lSS10N APPROVAL Procedure Description SP-STROKE-1 In Service Testing of Air Operated, CQE Yalves.
l This procedure did not constitute an unreviewed safety question as defined by 10CFR50.59 because it only allowed stroke testing to be conducted on 38 air operated valves.
The objective of the l
testing is to determine if valve operability was degraded (orisdegrading)duetotheintrusionof water into the instrument air system.
This I
testing did not in any way compromise plant safety, but enhanced it by ensuring operability of safety related valves, f
E.
RESULTS OF LEAK RATE TESTS "B" and "C" leak rate test results will be reported upun completion.
l l
F.
CHANGES IN PLANT OPERATING STAFF j
Mr. Carl Rennerfeldt, a Senior Licensed Operator, transferred to the Training Department. Mr. Mike Smith was tired as a Helper in the j
Operations Department.
j G.
TRAINING l
I During the month of September, hot license training was continued for two individuals. Licensed and non-Itcensed operator requal training continued. Preparation of materials for licensed operator requal examinations continued. Conducted training on safety evaluations and temporary modifications. Conducted System Engineer orientation I
training.
Management and supervisory training on Industrial Safety was conducted. During the month of September, Radiation Protection l
Training trained 52 contractors (20 hour2.314815e-4 days
0.00556 hours
3.306878e-5 weeks
7.61e-6 months
lecture) to support the outage.
In addition, 30 contractors finished their qualification l
manuals for six job functions.
The maintenance craft handbook was l
distributed to all crafts, both OPPD and contractor, to provide
]
guidance throughout the outage. Pre-outage training for QC i
contractors was complete and MOVATS team training was completed.
