HIGH PRESSURE INJECTION / MAKEUP N0ZZLE AND THERMAL SLEEVE IN DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION (DBNPS) UNIT 1. T0 LED 0 EDIS0N COMPANY (TACNO.69017)

The staff has completed its review of your evaluation of a cracked thermal sleeve and high pressure injection / makeup (HPI) nozzle, which was submitted in your letter dated September 14, 1988. The staff has concluded that DBNPS may operate for Cycle 6 without removing the flaws in the cracked HPI nozzle. The safety evaluation is enclosed.

In your September 14, 1988 letter you committed to evaluate and monitor bypass flow in the HPI line and to update the NRC, within 6 months following restart, on the specific corrective action you will take to either remove the cracks or monitor crack growth in the HPI thermal sleeve and nozzle. Your update to the NRC should address these concerns and identify the capability of the proposed methods to monitor crack growth in both the HPI thermal sleeve and nozzle ard to repair the crack.
