Addition of Coagulants to the Reactor Coolant System, dated December 22, 1986

+

(c) Letter 4410-85-Lc0215, F. Standerfer to M. Travers Use of Coagulants, December 31, 1986 Reference (a) submitted your request for NRC approval of a chemical coagulant for use in the reactor vessel filtration portion of the Defueling Water Cleanup Systea (DWCS). Reference (b) transmitted NRC staff approval of your proposal. By reference (c) you requested approval of a different coagulant however you stated that the processing equipment and codes of chemical injection would not be changed. Your proposal included a safety evaluation addressing criticality issues, compatibility of the coagulants with the RCS chemistry, and affects of the coa'gutant chemicals on the filter canisters.

4

' R We have ccapleted our review of reference (c) and have determined that the 1

proposed coagulant is acceptable for use and that our conclusions stated in

{

reference (b) are not affected by the use of the proposed naterial.

Y Ue therefore approve your propesal for the use of the melanine-fonaldehyde polyner as a DUCS coagulant. However, any filters containing coagulants are J

to be stored in the borated water of the reactor vessel, the fuel transfer canal, or the spent fuel pool in a non-dewatered condition until further evaluations of the coagulant's effects on the filter are completed.
