Subject:

LaSalle County Station Units 1 and 2 SOR Differential Pressure Switches NRC Docket Nos. 50-373 and 50-374 Reference (a): September 12, 1986 letter from C. M. Allen to H. R. Denton

Dear Mr. Denton:

The letter fulfills commitments made in Reference (a). These commitments relate to the disassembly and inspection of SOR differential pressure switches found unacceptable for use at LaSalle County Station (LSCS).

On November 24, 1986, switch 2B21 NO38A (ADS Permissive-Level 3) was found with the setpoint beyond the Reject Limit. The switch was replaced and sent to SOR Inc. for disassembly and inspection, the results of which are attached. The switches were pressure tested, leak tested, disassembled and all components inspected and measured. In addition, to alleviate concerns that coolant might be leaking along the shaft past the "O" ring, an extremely sensitive test was performed using a halogen detector. This test indicated zero leakage.

Test conclusions are as follows: 1) there is no leakage along the shaft bypassing the "O" ring; (2) inspection of the wetted internals found "like new" conditions; (3) the setpoint drift could not be replicated during a 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
test at the factory.

A large burr was found on the setpoint adjusting screw which could account for the difficulty in attaining a stable setpoint during calibration.

This instability could not be duplicated at the factory.

If you or your staff have any additional questions regarding this issue, please address them to this office.

Very truly yours, 10 3h 3 __-

SUBJECT:

SOR 103 DELTA-P SWITCH Model 103AS-B212-NX-JJTTX6 Serial No. 85-1-2395 Switch I.D. NO 38A

Dear Mr. Spitzner:

This report is to summarize the results of the factory disassembly and inspection of the above listed Delta-P Switch.

Our incom!ng inspee finn indicated the switch was a " good performer" (test data is attached).

The switch was dis-assembled (per CECO /LaSalle procedure) and nothing was found to explain why the set point drifted out of tolerance. However, a large burr on the set point adjusting screw could account for the difficulty in attaining a stable set point during calibration. (We could not duplicate th!s instability at the SOR factory.)

The cross shaft o-rings were tested at 1000 psi with a halogen leak detector calibrated to indicate a leak of 0.1 oz/ year. The leak detector indicated zero leakage.

l The internal wetted parts of the switch were inspected for foreign substances l and found to be in "like-new" condition.

e

(

l As notedj 'previously, the adjusting screw has been added to the 100%

inspection:Het to eliminate the burr problem.

if you require additional data, please call.
