Pursuant to 10CFR 50.55a(3), this letter is to inform you of Duke Power '

Company's intention to incorporate code case N-401-1 of the ' ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code into the Inservice Inspection Programs at the Duke Power nuclear stations.

A copy of the Code Case is attached to this letter.

Code Case N-401-1, Eddy Current Examination, has not received generic approval for use by the NRC as of Revision 6 of Rer ~ 'ory Guide 1.147. This code case specifies that, when demonstrated equiva* to the Authorized Nuclear Inser- ,

vice Inspector, digitized collection and storage of eddy' current' test ' data may be used as an alternative to magnetic tape and strip chart recording of eddy I current test data required by Section XI, Division 1, Appendix IV. Periodic i calibration in accordance with IV-3000 is required only for the analog elements of the digital eddy current data co.11ection and storage equipment. ,

1 Duke Power Company intends to use code case N-401-1 unless informed by the NRC Staff that it is not acceptable for use.

Replyt It is the opinion of the Committee that, when
