PRELI"ItlARY_ NOTIFICATION November 17, 1977 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-77-202 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff en this date.
Facility: Duquesne Light Company Beaver Valley Unit 1 (DN 50-334)

UNPLANNED FACILITY SHUTOOWN At 3:00 AM, November 16, 1977, the facility was shutdcwn from 100 percent power to investigate noises which developed in the main generator.
Examinations performed during the evening of November 16, 1977, revealed that a hot hydrogen gas return duct located inside the generator had loosened. Wold repair on the duct supports is expected to take two days.
No other problems were identified.
The Unit is expected to be back on-line by November 21, 1977.
The information presented herein is current as of 9:15 AM, November 17, 1977.
Media interest is expected because of attention given to operating problems at nuclear power plants. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been in-formed. A press release is not planned by the licensee or NRC.
NRC, Region I (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Plant Chief Engineer at 10:00 Afi, November 16, 1977.
