Ainger to U.S. NRC Gentlement The Byron Unit 1 Inservice Inspection (ISI) Program was developed to meet the requirements of the 1980 Edition through 1981 winter addenda of the ASME Section XI Code (Section XI 1980, W81). When the Byron Unit 2 ISI Program was established, Reference (a) requested the same ASME Code, described above, apply to both Byron Units 1 and 2.
Reference (b) proposed the use of the 1983 Edition through 1983 Summer Addenda of the ASME Section XI Code (Section XI 1983, S83) for both Byron Units 1 and 2.
A careful review of the two ASME Codes is delineated in Attachment A.
We have determined ~. hat the differences between the Codes have a minimal ef fect on the Byro: Jnits 1 and 2 ISI Program. Therefore, to reflect these changes, the Byron ISI Program Plan for Units 1 and 2 will be revised in accordance with the 1983 Edition th: ugh 1983 Summer Addenda of the ASME Section XI Code. This re'rision will be completed by the start of the Unit 1 refueling outage scheduled for September, 1988.

l A comparison and review of Section XI 1980, W81 versusSection XI 1983, S83 was conducted and very few differences were found.
The only examination recpe change is to Table IWB-2500-1, Category B-E, Item number B4.20.
Section XI 1980, W81 requires a VT-2 of 25% of the heater penetrations, where Section XI 1983, S83 requires a VT-2 of 100% of the heater penetrations.
The only document changes are for the use and submittal of the NIS-2 i
form as a required document.
Section XI 1980, W81 does not require a NIS-2 form where Section XI 1983, S83 does require a NIS-2 form.
Byron Station currently uces the NIS-2 form and meets the requirements of Section XI 1983, S83 in this area.

The ultrasonic examination, IWA-2232, as defined in Section XI 1980, W81 is more detailed in Section XI 1983, S83.
The remainder of the changes from Section XI 1980, W81 to Section XI 1983, S83 are editorial, grammatical, or they are to clarify or define specific axaminations. These changes either do not apply to Byron Station or they have an administrative impact only.
