Re: questions by the UK competent authority Ms. Herbst, j I
I I am replying to your e-mail yesterday to Wayne Hodges and Earl Easton, NRC, asking for information on the Fed Ex shipment that was erroneously routed to London, because the UK House of Parliament was going to have questions. The sources have now reached their destination in Mexico.
Factual info on this case can be found on NRC's Web Page at:
www.nrc. gov /NRR/ DAILY / der.htm (see Event EN 35612.... at the top of the page]
. If you cannot access that directly, you can take the following route: Go to NRC's public home page (www.nrc. gov). Click on the " News and information" icon. On the next screen, under the
" Current" column, click on " Event Reports". The event in question is described in EN 35612.
The event updates are current as of yesterday ...... with one typo. On the last page, the date should show the current year (1999) rather than 1998. . On Monday, NRC will correct the typo.
1 NRC has not issued other summaries or descriptions of the event. It has been discussed in some of the U.S. press (e.g., Boston Globe 4/27/99). We are putting info on the event l (background e-mails, etc.) into our Nuclear Materials Events Database, as documentation, and that database can be accessed by many U.S. regulators, but the NMED record will not become complete for at least a few more days. Many regulators external to NRC (e.g., States) have access to NMED, but it is not a publicly accessible database. We have not issued a press release on the event.
That is the most factually correct info that we can offer quickly. Again, the sources have arrived at their originally-intended destination in Mexico. Although FedEx mistakenly routed the shipment to England, and could not account for it for a period of time, we have no reason to ,
believe that the sources ever left the transportation system. Since they stayed within FedEx' !
system, in an approved shipping container, we have no reason to believe that any public or worker dose limits were ever exceeded during the event.
Hope this helps. Please contact us if you have any questions.

there will be questions in the House of Parliament today about the IR-192 Package that Fed. Ex. erroneously routed to London. Accordingly, the UK delegation here has asked Rick Boyle of DOT and myself for details concerning US actions and all information available.
Please send me any information about our response; Rick told me that according to Fred Ferrante, Al Roberts does not believe much needs to be

done since it never left - the FedEx system. It is DOTS action to follow up since it was a carrier action. I did suggest to Jim Stewart of the UK that they contact the AEA Safety Radiation Officer for information about the contents and the package since Bil! McDaniel told me that AEA in Massachusetts did not intend to do anything since they delivered the package ,
correctly to the carrier. I I
Please reply today early since we are six hours later that you all.
