Attachment 1 Catawba Nuclear Station Summaries and analyses of results of activities required by Section 4.2 of the EPP.

Section 4.2.1 Aerial Remote Sensing During late summer 1984, a series of infrared photographs (1 inch = 500 f t.)

were made of land areas around Catawba (approximately i sq. mi.). These photos of area will provide baseline preoperational data on the general condition vegetatien. A similar set of phctographs were obtained in 1983.

Data will be obtained again in 1985 and an initial report submitted as part of the 1986 Catawba Annual Environmental Operating Report.

Section 4.2.2 Sound Level Surveys '

No operational sound level surveys were made during 1984 as the station was not operating during the year. Surveys are planned for 1985 and will be compared to those made during pre-operational years. ,

Complaint 1: On October 25, 1984 at 11 P.M., Mrs. Angie Garrett of 4255 Whistlestop Drive contacted the station to complain about the continual noise or " hum" coming from the plant. Scotty Bradshaw sent someone from operations to the area where Mrs. Garrett lives to listen for this " hum". They were not able to detect any noises outside the usual night sounds.

As a follow-up, I contacted Mrs. Garrett at 6 on October 26 to tell her what action had been taken the night before, to further inquire as to the nature of the noise and to offer to do noise monitoring at her home if the noise persisted (Hrs. Garrett had made a similar complaint in 1983).

The cooling tower fans were not in operatior. at that time, it was a cleer night and the hum she heard might have been due to the exhaust fans used for ventilation in the turbine buildings.
