Reference:
ULNRC-1457 dated March 3, 1987 The referenced letter transmitted the latest information on the Callaway Inservice Inspection Program Plan. As comriitted to in a phone call with NRC Staff and their consultant, EG&G, the attached information supplements the discussion of the Containment Spray System.
Relief Request B should no longer be considered at this time. Union Electric withdraws this Relief Request based upon expected advancements in examination technology and the length of time remaining prior to performance of the exams.
The NRC will be advised at a future date if any relief will be requested, i

INTRODUCTION

This documents presents the Supplemental Inservice Inspection (ISI) of the containment Spray System. The examinations identified in this plan are in excess of the examinations required by ASM2 BPV Code Section XI 1974 Edition Summer 1975 Addenda. Selection of welds in Class 2 piping is based upon this edition and addenda as required by 10CFR50.55a(b)(2)(iv) dated 1 January 1983.
10CFR50 of 1 January 1983 was that Code referenced for ISI program development based upon a commercial operation date of 18 December 1984. Callaway is committed to ASME BPV Code Section XI 1980 edition, Winter 1981 addenda for all other ISI activities.
The methodology of examination and the acceptance criteria will be in accordance with Document 83A0977, " Inservice Inepection Program Plan General Reference Text" for Callaway.
2.
WELD SELECTION The welds identified in this plan have been selected by using the general guidelines of Code Case N-408.
However, the use of these guidelines is not a commitment of the Callaway Nuclear Plant to Code i
Case N408.
The number of welds selected total 7.5% of the austenitic stainless welds not exempted by Code Case N408. However, the selected welds are limited to those in piping with a diameter >NPS 4 inch and a vall thickness 23/8 inch.
The examinations are distributed among terminal ends and structural discontinuities prorated to the degree practical and, the examinations are distributed between various line sizes prorated to the degree practical.
1 l
In addition, the first veld past the normally closed isolation valve in one train will be examined.
3.
CALIBRATION STANDARDS Table 1 lists the Calibration Standards for ultrasonic examinations scheduled for the Containment Spray System.

PROGRAM PLAN AND SCHEDULE The specific Containment Spray ISI exaninations are identified in the Program Plan and Schedule Tabic. This Program Plan lists all the required examinations for the first 10 year (120 months) interval of 3 periods of 40 months each.
The use of the selection criteria identified in Section 2 results in the selection of 9 welds (7.5% of 116) and any associated longi-tudinal seams, and I weld which is past the normally closed isolation valve. This is less than the minimum required number of 28 welds identified in N408. Hosever, N408 pertains to RHR, ECC, and CHR systems. To accommodate this and the future compliance to later editions of Section XI which may require additional weld selection in the RHR and ECC systems, the welds and associated longitudinal seams will be inspected once every period. This is in excess of the once per interval requirement.
Each weld and component is designated by a unique identification number, and then described. Also identified are applicable examination method, procedure number, and calibration standard number.
Extent of examination for Class 2 longitudinal welds is 2.5 times the wall thickness measured from the circumferential weld (note 2.5t in
]
remarks column).
4 The direction of upstream (LU) and downstream (LD) for longitudinal seams is measured from the circumferential weld.
The procedures noted in the attached Program Plan and Schedule Tables refer to examination procedures identified in the Inservice Inspection Program Plans provided to Union Electric by Nuclear Energy Services under contract 10466-M-189.
