APR 0 3 1987 Docket No. 50-309 1

Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company ATTN: Mr. J. B. Randazza j

Vice President Nuclear Operations d

83 Edison Drive j

Augusta, Maine 04336 l

Gentlemen:

i In addition to an NRC Region I inspection team to observe your performance in the Maine Yankee Exercise of June 10, 1987, Region I is planning on participating as players.

Whenever Region I participates as a player in a i

licensee exercise, we request that representatives from the licensee's i

Emergency Preparedness staff provide the Region I staff a training session on i

their emergency organization, facilities, and procedures.

Both the licensee j

and NRC staffs have found these sessions very beneficial, and feedback from these sessions has been most encouraging.

Since Region I is planning to

]

participate in your June 10, 1987 exercise, I would like to request appropriate members of your staff provide a training session on the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station in the Region I Office on May 27,1987 at 9:00

)

a.m.

Preliminary discussions between our staffs indicate this date to be i

mutually acceptable.

l 1

The agenda is flexible.

Although I have attached a sample agenda used for a similar training session, you should not feel constrained in any manner to follow a similar program.

Your agenda should reflect those items of your Emergency Response Program your staff feels NRC personnel should be knowledgeable of to ensure a well coordinated NRC-licensee response to the i

emergency.

Previous training sessions have varied from three to five hours j

depending on the type of training and issues of concern.

j We look forward to participation in your June 10, 1987 exercise.

If there are any questions on this matter, please contact K. Ferlic (215-337-5083) of my staff.

j Sincerely, Original Signed By:
