I Gentlemen:

In granting our request for an extension to the operational dead!!nes for the Safety Parameter Display System (SPDS), Reference (a), you required us to provide quarterly progress reports beginning January 1,1987.

Attached is the second of these reports covering the progress of the SPDS project for the i

first quarter of 1987. As you specified in Reference (a), we are providing:

our progress in establishing the fully operational SPDS for each unit, the status of the SPDS software development and testing, and the identification and status of the critical path item.

We confirm that Unit 2 SPDS will be operable no later than July 1,1988. We will notify you if, for some unforeseen circumstance, we should be unable to meet this schedule.

ATTACHMENT SAFETY PARAMETER DISPLAY SYSTEM PROGRESS REPORT ist QUARTER 1987 A. SPDS Progress 1.

The plant computer was shipped to the site early this year. Site acceptance testing uncovered several problems that the vendor came to the site to fix.

Testing was completed and problems were resolved. Unit 2's computer will be installed this outage.

Operator training on the plant computer was initiated and is nearly coniplete.

3.

Site acceptance testing for the data acquisition system was completed.

Additional SPDS instrument inputs need to be added. Installation has begun and will continue through this outage.

B.

Status of Sof tware Development and Testing 1.

Internal vendor test and factory acceptance test were completed.

2.

The SPDS sof tware was added to the plant computer and site acceptance testing is proceeding.

3.

An integrated accident-based test scenario is being developed. This will be used to fully exercise the SPDS during the outage.

C. Critical Path Item 1.

Computcr capacity is still the critical path item. Software was integrated on-site and capacity appears to be satisfactory. We must reserve final judgment until all components are installed and the system is fully exercised during the outage.
