USE OF AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS (ASME)
CODE CASE N-401 FOR FORT CALHOUN STATION, UNIT N0. 1 By letter dated January 27, 1987, you requested authorization to use ASME Code Case N-401 for use in steam generator eddy current examinations. Code Case N-401, " Eddy Current Examination,Section XI, Division 1," provides for the use of digitized collection and storage of data for permanent record of eddy current test data as an alternative to the magnetic tape and strip chart recording recuired in Appendix IV of Section XI of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
Code Case N-401 has been endorsac oy the NRC and is referenced in Revision 5 of Regulatory Guide 1.147, "Ir. service Inspection Code Case Acceptability ASME Section XI, Division 1," date3 August 1986. The staff has reviewed your request and determined that Code Cast N-401 is an acceptable Code Case which is approved as written.
The NRC staff concludes that Code Case N-401 may be used for the Fort Calhoun Station, Unit No.1, with the limitations stated in the " Inquiry" and " Reply" sections of the Code Case. This conclusion is based upon our determination, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(1), that the licensee has demonstrated that this proposed alternative would provide an acceptable level of quality and safety.
