Gentlemen:

Subject: Inspection Raport No. 50-333/88-26

This letter refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by

Mr. R. A. McBrearty of this office on September 26 to October 7, 1988 at the

, James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant. Mr. McBrearty discussed the findings

of the inspection with Mr. Converse at the conclusion of the inspection.

The inspection focused on inservice inspection activities. Areas examined

during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I Inspection Report

which is enclosed with this letter. Within tiese areas, the inspection

consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative records,

interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspector.

Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were observed. However,

difficulty in performing ultrasonic examinations for stress corrosion cracking

due to inadequate surface preparation was identified in one case and attention

should be given to assuring that weld surfaces are adequately prepared for

effective ultrasonic examination.
