Dear Sir:

Application is hereby made under the provisions of Title 10, Atomic Energy Comission, Part 70, Section 70.33 by Wellesley College, Physics Department, Wellesley, MA 02181 for a Special Nuclear Materials License.

j Our license for possession and use of the material described herein, license SNM-416, expires on August 31, 1985.

Application for said license. is made for a period of five years, to cover possession and use of 16.020 grams plutonium encapsulated as a Pu-Be neutron source, as described in the license SNM-416. The said source is housed in the Science Center of Wellesley College.

Floor plans for rooms where material is stored and used have been submitted with renewal application of July 18, 1980. The detection counters are calibrated routinely and leak tests are performed at 6 month intervals.

The last leak test was done on July 23, 1985 and no leakage was detected.

The source and the use to which it will be put are the same as described in Professor Janet Guernsey's original application dated August 18, 1960 and amplified in her letter of October 7,1960.

I now serve as coordinator for the use of the neutron source.

I have a Ph.D. in physics, which was granted by the University of Wisconsin in 1954.

A listing of name, address and citizenship of Wellesley College's principle officers is appended to this request.

I understand that the existing license will not expire until application for renewal has finally been determined by the Commission.

If there are any questions relating to this request for renewal, please contact me or Professor Gary C. Harris, Radiation Safety Officer at (617) 235-0320.
